Position paper: Unlocking Europe’s Untapped Agricultural Biomass Potential: A More Integrated Policy Framework for Biogas Production

This position paper highlights the untapped potential of agricultural biomass in Europe and the need for a more coherent policy framework. By better integrating resources such as ley, intermediate crops and plant residues into biogas production, Europe can support renewable energy, climate goals and more resilient agricultural systems at the same time. The paper calls for stronger alignment between the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the EU Bioeconomy Strategy, so that multifunctional biomass systems and their combined benefits are better recognised.
