Online workshop: Sustainable Biomass Availability and Mobilisation

Event Type
Organiser: IEA Bioenergy Technology Collaboration Programme
How can we secure sufficient and sustainable biomass availability for energy and materials? And how can biomass be mobilised in a way that supports food and feed security, biodiversity, soil quality, nutrient cycles and social sustainability?
IEA Bioenergy Technology Collaboration Programme is organising an online workshop on Sustainable Biomass Availability and Mobilisation on 17 June 2026. The workshop will be held in two identical sessions to enable participation from different parts of the world.
The topic is highly relevant for actors working with bioenergy, agriculture, biogas, biomass logistics and sustainable resource use. Biomass from forestry, agriculture, industrial residues, municipal waste and other side streams is an important resource in the transition towards renewable energy and fossil-free materials. At the same time, sustainable mobilisation of biomass can be complex, as resources are often spread across different locations and seasons, and different end uses require different feedstock qualities, logistics and pre-treatment solutions.
The workshop will explore how to secure sustainable biomass availability and how to organise upstream mobilisation under sustainable conditions. Discussions will also address how biomass use can be balanced with other important functions, such as food and feed production, biodiversity, soil health and circular nutrient flows.
The theme connects closely to Accel AgroBiogas’ work to develop and share sustainable biomass supply concepts for increased and more sustainable biogas production. The project’s communication strategy highlights the importance of sharing knowledge, methods and good examples with actors such as farmers, biogas producers, advisors and decision-makers.
Programme structure
The workshop will last approximately two hours and includes:
- Opening session with moderator Mark Brown, IEA Bioenergy TCP Chairman and Task Leader on Biomass Supply
- One or two keynote presentations
- Session on sustainable biomass availability
- Presentations from IEA Bioenergy TCP representatives
- Break-out discussions on sustainable biomass availability
- Session on sustainable biomass mobilisation
- Presentations from IEA Bioenergy TCP representatives
- Break-out discussions on sustainable biomass mobilisation
- Closing session, including next steps on the identified topics
Further programme details will be announced shortly.
