Living Lab Skåne
In the Skåne Living Lab, the focus is on exploring opportunities to broaden the range of substrates used for biogas production in Southern Sweden. Ongoing discussions and dialogue take place between farmers, biogas companies, advisors, contractors, municipalities, and academia. The aim is to evaluate and test new types of agriculture-based biomass for biogas production in one of the country’s most agriculture-intensive regions.
In spring 2025, a number of interesting substrates were identified that the Living Lab will continue working with:
-
Cereal straw
-
Straw silage
-
Green rye stems
-
Grass silage from fields with herbicide-resistant blackgrass
-
Summer and winter cover crops (oilseed radish, phacelia, winter rye)
-
Potato haulm
-
Beet tops

Information from Living Lab Skåne
Need for biomass for biogas production
Skåne has significant potential for increased biogas production, but manure alone is not enough to meet future demand. New substrates from agricultural residual streams will be essential for scaling up production while also contributing to climate benefits and more efficient resource use.
