How can catch crops contribute to increased biogas production while also delivering environmental benefits within agricultural cropping systems? This was one of the key questions explored as we began our study tour to Denmark with a visit to Lykkeslund, north of Odense. Here, farmers, biogas producers and advisors from Sweden and Denmark gained insights into practical experiences and ongoing trials involving new feedstocks for biogas production.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n
At Lykkeslund, on the Danish island of Funen, pig farming and crop production across 1,400 hectares are combined with large-scale biogas production. Each year, the facility produces approximately 65 GWh of upgraded biogas, which is injected into the gas grid. In addition to manure, feedstocks such as straw, grass, sugar beet and catch crops are used in the production process.<\/p>\n\n
The farm also participates in a development project evaluating different types of catch crops as feedstocks for biogas production. The trials cover the entire process, from cultivation and harvesting to biochemical methane potential (BMP) testing and economic evaluation. The aim is to increase knowledge of how catch crops can be integrated into crop production and contribute to more sustainable and profitable biogas production.<\/p>\n\n
New cultivation strategies aim to increase biomass production and reduce nitrogen leaching<\/h2>\n\n
The visit began with a seminar where farm owner Lars Langskov Nielsen presented the farm’s operations and discussed the opportunities for using catch crops in biogas production. Ulrik Kragh from the agricultural advisory company BJ-Agro then presented preliminary results from the ongoing trials.<\/p>\n\n

\nFollowing the seminar, participants toured the biogas facility and visited the fields to see how oilseed radish is grown in combination with the nitrogen-fixing plant hairy vetch.<\/p>\n\n
Two aspects of the cultivation strategy were particularly interesting:<\/p>\n\n

Early establishment allows for a longer growing season.<\/strong> Oilseed radish is sown as early as mid-July, directly into the growing cereal crop. This gives the catch crop a longer growing season and better conditions for producing biomass that can be used for biogas production.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n
Nitrogen-fixing plants contribute to a more efficient cropping system.<\/strong> Oilseed radish is established together with hairy vetch, which can contribute nitrogen to the cropping system through biological nitrogen fixation. When the oilseed radish is harvested in late October, the vetch continues to grow and take up nitrogen. The combination aims to reduce the risk of nitrogen leaching during late autumn and winter.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
The trials highlight interesting opportunities to combine biomass production for biogas with other important functions within agricultural cropping systems. By developing cultivation methods that make better use of the potential of catch crops, agriculture can contribute additional renewable energy while improving nutrient use efficiency.<\/p>\n\n
Sharing experiences across borders<\/h2>\n\n
The study tour is organised as part of the project to strengthen knowledge exchange between farmers, biogas companies and advisors in Sweden and Denmark.
